The first meeting with a Family Lawyer

If you are having problems in your relationship and have decided to seek legal advice, you may have some concerns about what to expect at your first meeting with a family lawyer. Your initial consultation with Backhouse Solicitors will allow you to outline your issue, discuss your options and ask any questions.

What to bring to your first family lawyer meeting

If you are married and are thinking you want to start divorce proceedings, please bring your marriage certificate.

If you are seeking advice about financial matters arising from the breakdown of your marriage, please provide as much detail as you can about the finances of yourself and your partner. Such as the value of your home, the size of your (and your partner’s) mortgage, investments, savings, pension and details of income.

If you are seeking advice about any Court hearing, then you will need to bring all court paperwork with you.

Getting advice from a family lawyer at the first meeting

The first meeting is a 30-minute consultation which will be free of charge. It should be possible to give you initial advice and deal with any immediate concerns or questions you may have. You will be informed of the likely costs of any work you wish the firm to undertake on your behalf.

Next Steps

If you would like us to act on your behalf, we will ask you to pay either the fixed fee or money on account. It may be necessary for a further meeting however that will depend upon the case.

If after the first meeting, you don’t want to proceed any further, that is absolutely fine. Some people just want to seek some preliminary advice and then think things through. Backhouse Solicitors will have your file ready to go, if you need further help from us.
