With our Head Office in Chelmsford, Essex and a second office in Leigh-on-Sea, we help clients across the South East of England and beyond.

The firm was started in 2005 by Minal Backhouse, a leading specialist in employment law, with the intention of offering clients the best possible expertise, a top-class service and value for money. Backhouse Solicitors grew quickly, and we soon established ourselves as one of the most successful and largest employment law teams in Essex. Along the way, we’ve represented employees and employers in Employment Tribunals all over the UK.

As the company grew, we encountered more and more enquiries relating to other areas of law, and in 2009, we opened our debt recovery department and now work with clients from small businesses up to large multinationals.

In June 2015, Backhouse Solicitors merged with Duffield Stunt Solicitors, doubling in size and enabling us to help clients with a much wider range of legal problems. Duffield Stunt itself was created from the merger of Duffields (formed in 1799) and Stunt & Son (formed in 1825), so we can now trace our origins back over more than two centuries of serving the people and businesses in Chelmsford and Essex.

October 2024 marked another milestone as we decided to expand our business even further by opening an office in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, enabling us to assist more clients in the local area and widen our scope for hiring talented professionals to join the Backhouse team.
